My view on civilians.

Perhaps it is due to by indoctrination into the army, but I find myself becoming less and less tolerating of the civilians in general. What is worse, is the refusal of civilians to accept conscription and the need for it in my country. We may not love our government but our way of life definitely has something worth fighting for.

That they speak treacherously of negligence of their duties commonly, of migrating, of taking the benefits of the citizenship but none of the responsibilities sickens me. How can one stand amongst such people and not be filled with contempt.

I realised after looking at the budget Singapore puts into their defence, that they sincerely believe the conscript army will defend them.

It is the Soldier, not the reporter who has given us freedom of press
It is the Soldier, not the poet who has given us freedom of speech
It is the Soldier, not the campus organizer who gives us freedom to demonstrate
It is the Soldier who salutes the flag,
who serves beneath the flag,
and whose coffin is draped by the flag,
who allows the protester to burn the flag.

-Father Dennis Edward O'Brien

"There is one unalterable difference between a soldier and a civilian: the civilian never does more than he is paid to do."

- Erwin Rommel, Field Marshall
