Theology.

I've been thinking about the subject of whether god truly exists or not. I was reading this website that gives 50 simple proofs that god does not exist and religion is a figment of our imagination. Regardless, of the proofs or whatever it may entail, the greatest worry which crept into being was this simple concept of retribution.

As much as we like to believe that the regulation of law and order is independant of religion and functions on its own with its legislative, judiciary and executive officers, we cannot delude ourselves to the fact that the fundamental intrinsic motivation for the general populace to obey the law does not come so much out of the fear of the repercussions of the law but rather, the fear of the afterlife which is infinite and inescapeable.

As ridiculous as it seems to the educated thinker the general population can be described with the following statements.

"Religion is what keeps the poor from murdering the rich."
"Religion is enlightenment for the wise, a useful tool for dictators and opium for the masses."

Without the falsity of religion to maintain the delicate balance of law and order, society will cease to exist and chaos will tear it apart. What is the deterrence for the general populace to take what they want? Let us examine disasters, where mass looting and crimes occur on a mass scale. How many dissenters can the police and the military kill? There is only so much people you can kill before the country is bled dry, or there is only so much you can do to maintain order, there is only so much rifles and bullets to shoot before you're empty.

If I knew that religion didn't exist, I would willingly indulge in all excessive vices and hedonistic acts at the expense of others so long as I will never suffer physical repercussion. Although it is a tempting thought, I refuse to do so on grounds of chivalry and virtue which is ironically based on religion itself. If religion doesn't exist and there is not after life, your virtuous acts will net you nothing, neither heaven nor hell but plain emptiness.

You simply cease to exist.

Its painful to know that religion is the lie that keeps society intact. That the majority of people will not take the harder right even with the promises of heaven in the afterlife. If they knew that religion is false, how rapidly will our society fall into anarchy? Pouring in effort day after day for no plausible gain at all. None. Truly altruistic, or absolutely uneconomical and sheer stupidity.

On a side note, what if all the cardinals, popes, priests, clerics etc in the world KNEW that god didn't exist? And kept up this entire facade for the purpose of maintaining some semblance of order?

Grand conspiracy theories on the rise...
